Critical Reflection

Module Learning In week 2 of my course on Critical Thinking and Communicating, I have set my goals towards improving my body language and speaking skills, as well as learning critical thinking skills to perform problem solving and decision making. During the following weeks of my critical thinking classes, I have learned how to prepare for presentations and use the Paul-Elder critical thinking framework to analyze issues and form solutions. To prepare for presentations, the Garr Reynold’s presentation tips helped me to design and plan engaging slides that are effective at transmitting important messages. This helped with my speaking skills as I was able to use the slides to focus what my points and stay on track. Not only did it help to cut down on my filler words, my arms and legs were able to stay grounded as I utilized a remote-control device to focus the audience attention on important points. As for critical thinking skills, the Paul-Elder critical thinking framework is a

Ghod’s article “Mars helicopter Ingenuity: First aircraft to fly on Red Planet” (2021) announces that Ingenuity is the first aircraft to fly on Mars. Ingenuity is designed to be a technology demonstration to prove that powered flight is possible on Mars thin atmosphere (Gohd, 2021). According to NASA (n.d.-a), Ingenuity is an experimental flight test and does not carry any science instruments onboard. The components onboard Ingenuity are only for optimizing flight tests conducted on Mars and to send engineering data and imagery back to Earth (NASA, n.d.-a).  As the atmospheric volume on Mars is less than 1% compared to Earth, Ingenuity is specially designed to be able to achieve its mission. To overcome the lack of atmosphere, Ingenuity is light and small, weighing at 0.68 kilograms on Mars while having a wingspan of 1.2 meters (Gohd, 2021). Furthermore, Ingenuity’s blades must spin at a high rate of 2500RPM due to the density of the atmosphere (Etherington, 2021). According to Gohd (2

Thus, Ingenuity is designed to be light, weighing at 0.68kg on Mars, and has long blades, measuring 1.2 meters across (Gohd, 2021). According to NASA (n.d), Ingenuity is an experimental flight test and does not carry any science instruments onboard. The components onboard Ingenuity are only for optimizing flight tests conducted on Mars and to send back engineering data and imagery to Earth (NASA, n.d). A solar panel is located at the top of Ingenuity that powers the six lithium-ion battery system (NASA, n.d). This battery system powers Ingenuity for flight and operates the heaters for the cold weather at night on Mars (NASA, n.d). A black and white camera is faced downwards to calculate the position and alt

Letter of Introduction

From, Hew Tze Kin Cliven Block 642 Choa Chu Kang Street 64 #09-75 S(680642)   Date: September 4 th , 2022   Subject: Self Introduction Dear Professor Brad, My name is Cliven Hew, and I am a first-year student in SIT studying robotics. Before joining SIT as a robotics student, I studied in Republic Polytechnic as an electrical and electronics student. This is where I picked up an interest in robotics systems engineering as I had to design a robotic crawler for my final year project. I was tasked with programming the raspberry pi to move the crawler inside the pipeline as its purpose was to identify any defects found internally. Upon getting the crawler to work, I felt pride and a sense of accomplishment, and it was this feeling that made me realize  that I wanted to be involved in similar projects upon entering the workforce. For my internship, I had the opportunity to experience working as an aerospace technician. Through the mentorship under the senior technici

Reaction to the Soul of Communication

According to the article, good critical thinking enables rational thinking, sound reasoning, and coherent arguments. This enables clarity of thought, and effective communication starts with a clear thought process. I agree with the mentioned points as critical thinking helps us to understand the topic better, the importance and link between arguments and ideas, and come up with an effective solution.   As stated in the article, “Poor communication has been attributed to poor employee engagement and attrition.”. I have seen an example of poor employee engagement when one of my colleagues at a previous workplace sent out an email with typos and errors. The message in the email was vague as well and led to miscommunication.   It was mentioned that the estimated cost of poor communication in the US and UK is revealed to be estimated at US$37 billion dollars, and US$75 million is at risk for every US$1 billion spent on a project due to bad communication. This can happen when there i

Paraphrasing

Original Quote: "Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter." Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp Paraphrased Quote: According to Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp, the development of excellent communication skills is critical to achieving effective leadership. In order to impart a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others, the leader must be able to convey knowledge and ideas effectively. If the leader is unable to do so, there is no point in having a message.
